Cannabidiol wordt gewonnen uit hennep, dat al eeuwenlang in allerlei vormen wordt toegepast voor medische en niet-medische doeleinden. Epidyolex® bestaat uit gezuiverd cannabidiol. De gezuiverde stof is onderworpen aan uitgebreid onderzoek en de effecten van Epidyolex® bij een aantal epilepsiesyndromen zijn inmiddels in kaart gebracht in meerdere gerandomiseerde klinische studies. Epidyolex is een Europees geregistreerd geneesmiddel voor gebruik als adjuvante therapie in combinatie met clobazam bij aanvallen die geassocieerd worden met het Lennox-Gastautsyndroom (LGS) of het Dravetsyndroom (DS) bij patiënten van 2 jaar en ouder, en voor gebruik als adjuvante therapie bij aanvallen die geassocieerd worden met tubereuze sclerose complex (TSC) bij patiënten van 2 jaar en ouder.
