In de afgelopen jaren is duidelijk geworden dat het doorgemaakt hebben van myasthenia gravis leidt tot een een sterk vergrote kans op het ontwikkelen van neuromyelitis optica, soms vele jaren later. Het specifieke neuro-immunologische mechanisme dat de relatie tussen deze twee ziektes verklaart is echter nog niet volledig opgehelderd. Aan de hand van een patiënt die meer dan 20 jaar na het ontstaan van myasthenia gravis neuromyelitis optica ontwikkelde, bespreken wij de meest recente inzichten. Daarnaast presenteren wij de ontwikkelingen op het gebied van behandeling van neuromyelitis optica.
